The work on the exterior of the building is now complete except for the doors that will be installed during the second week of December.
Shingles, clapboard and trim now cover 75% of the building, and only the front (South side) of the building remains to be finished.
The external framing of the building has been completed, and the roof structure is nearly finished.
Join us in welcoming our new Teen Librarian, Abby Porter to Essex Library!
As the framing of the building is completed, and some of the roof trusses are added, it is possible to get an idea of how the new library will look.
The slab is poured for the new library on June 9, 2014
The new library will be on a single level, with a concrete slab as its base. After weeks of work putting pipes and conduits under and through what will be the slab, the big day finally arrived, and throughout the day a fleet of trucks brought concrete to the site. The entire 23,772 square foot slab was poured on June 9, and will cure as the carpenters begin framing the building. Another milestone accomplished!
On Monday, May 19, 2014 the new building "Topping Off" ceremony was held.
Topping off is a tradition in the construction industry that marks the placement of the last beam atop a new structure. The beam was signed by the architects, construction managers, library staff, and a gathering of library supporters who celebrated this major milestone. The next step will be pouring the slab floor for the building, and then work on the walls and roof will begin.
Once the footings, foundation and piers were complete, it was possible to start attaching the structural steel that will form the skeleton of the new library building.
While difficult winter weather has slowed progress, the footings are now complete and 90% of the foundation walls have been poured. The water mains have been installed and the next step will be preparing the interior spaces, so that the piers and the building slab can be poured.
In spite of the snow and cold, work has continued on the footings and foundation walls. This view from the Northeast corner of the site shows the outline of the Children's Wing, and beyond it to the right is the North side of the building. The crews are making good progress, and the foundation work is expected to be completed during February.
