Footings Complete

Mon, 03/17/2014

While difficult winter weather has slowed progress, the footings are now complete and 90% of the foundation walls have been poured. The water mains have been installed and the next step will be preparing the interior spaces, so that the piers and the building slab can be poured.

Beginning to See the Building Outline

Thu, 01/30/2014

In spite of the snow and cold, work has continued on the footings and foundation walls. This view from the Northeast corner of the site shows the outline of the Children's Wing, and beyond it to the right is the North side of the building. The crews are making good progress, and the foundation work is expected to be completed during February.

Making Progress

Wed, 01/29/2014

Despite difficult weather conditions, work on the new building continues on schedule.

Footing excavation has been completed at the Teen Wing, South Terrace and the East side of the Staff Workroom and Mechanical Room. Footings have been poured along the north side of the Staff Workroom and along the southern end of the West Terrace; formwork has been removed from both locations. Foundation wall formwork construction is in progress along the north and east sides of the Staff Workroom, as well as the southern end of the West Terrace. Foundation wall formwork has been constructed at the east entrance between the Children’s Wing and the foundation walls have been poured along the entire north side of the building, the entire Children’s Wing and mid-way along the Western side of the building. Grade has been brought up inside of Children’s Wing – ready for steel column anchor plates.

Pouring the Footings

Mon, 12/30/2013

As soon as the site was cleared, the outlines of the new library building were marked and trenches dug where the footings would be placed. After compacted gravel fill covered the bottom of the trenches, the forms for the footings were established, steel reinforcement bars placed, and concrete poured. This has been underway during December and will continue for at least another month.

Clearing the Site

Mon, 11/25/2013

Work at the new library site began the next week with East Coast Construction clearing trees from the wooded areas that would become the library, roads, parking lot, and utility access lanes. Soon the site appearance was very different, as the trees and stumps were removed and the remaining trees shed their leaves for the winter.

The next step was clearing the surface of rocks deposited there thousands of years ago by the most recent glacier to cover the region. The largest of the rocks were broken up with jack hammers, and were moved to large piles for crushing into gravel that will be used on the site to fill areas and provide a subsurface for the roads. As the photo shows, the appearance of the site has changed dramatically during the month of November.

Breaking Ground

Sat, 10/26/2013

By mid-October 2013, the critical funding for the new library had been secured and the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services had authorized the start of construction. In addition, the Town building permit had been issued, as had those from the state Department of Environmental Management and other agencies. A $7,722,137 Guaranteed Maximum Price construction contract was signed with Behan Brothers, Inc. of Middletown, RI, the project construction manager. It was time for groundbreaking.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, a gorgeous fall day. With a large group of library supporters, donors and town, state and federal officials at hand, the community noted with great pleasure that work on the new library was underway.  For a full description of the ceremony see the RI Library Report.
